Smart meters: radiating electricity meters
Electrosmog is spreading secretly, quietly and silently in our residential areas. This is not just about the many cordless and cell phones, Wi-Fi and more and more networked household items such as bathroom scales, outdoor and indoor thermometers, refrigerators, radiators, light switches, etc.. We are talking about the smart meter, the electricity meter of the future, which is already installed in many homes today and is set to be used in almost all households by 2020. A new source of radiation is penetrating our private sphere almost unnoticed and is making a major contribution to the general threat to our health.
What are smart meters?
Smart meter is the name for new “intelligent” electricity meters that are in constant contact with the relevant supply companies and transmit the current electricity consumption in continuous operation. Smart meters are currently being installed in almost all new buildings. Over the coming years, all European households are to be converted to smart meter technology. The aim is to create a smart grid. According to the network operators, the continuous monitoring of individual electricity consumption should help to cushion any load peaks that may occur by shifting consumption, for example. But at what price?
Smart meters – the dangers
Irrespective of the fact that we as consumers do not even know what data is being collected and transmitted and are not asked whether we agree to have a usage profile created based on our electricity consumption, a closer look at how smart meters work reveals some aspects that appear more than questionable. In addition to the fact that a clever hacker could manipulate the meter and switch off the lights, health threats are the main concern.
High-frequency electrosmog
The usual method of transmitting data from the smart meter to the energy supplier is via mobile radio. In other words, a quasi-permanently active mobile phone connection is established to a nearby mobile phone tower. The frequency of the GPRS transmitter is a mixture of GSM and 3G (UMTS) and transmits data in broadband. The radiation is similar to that of a radar and transforms the entire house into a pulsed high-frequency field in continuous operation. In addition to the other radiation fields from WLAN, DECT and cell phones, we are now facing an additional burden whose medium and long-term effects can only be guessed at.
If you live in an apartment building, you will be extremely burdened, as the electricity meters for each individual apartment are usually concentrated in the basement. 20 apartments mean 20 additional high-frequency transmitters. The residents on the first floor are particularly affected by this.
There are numerous reports of headaches, dizziness, permanent fatigue, burning eyes and skin, depression, tinnitus, body and joint pain as a direct result of installing a smart meter. These are the known clinical pictures that are typically caused by high-frequency electrosmog. There are also quite a few doctors and psychologists who attribute ADHD and hyperactivity in children and adolescents as well as infertility to the presence of high-frequency electrosmog. There is also a high correlation with rheumatism. The Leipzig physicist Stefan Spaarmann, head of IG Elektrosmog at the Bund Umwelt und Naturschutz Sachsen, says “I would never bring such technology into my home”.
