5G: “Not acting today can prove to be a disaster tomorrow”

In Turin, the Court of Appeal confirms the brain tumor case of a former employee of Telecom Italia as a result of professional cell phone use. Demonstrations against the expansion of the 5G standard were held in numerous cities such as Hamburg and Zurich. Swedish professor Olle Johansson warns of the consequences of mobile phone radiation.

According to a report on diagnose-funk.org, the Turin Court of Appeal confirmed in its recently published reasons for the verdict that the brain tumor of a former employee of Telecom Italia was caused by his professional cell phone use. Roberto Romeo had already won his lawsuit against the Italian employers’ liability insurance association INAIL at first instance in 2017, and now he has legal certainty. He has been suffering from an acoustic neuroma (benign tumor of the auditory and vestibular nerve, auditory nerve surgically removed) since 2010. He had been using his cell phone for three to four hours a day for 15 years for professional reasons. Incidentally, experts from the industry-related ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) presented by the defence were rejected by the Turin court due to bias.

6,000 signatures handed over in Hamburg

At practically the same time, BUND Hamburg called for a halt to the expansion of the 5G mobile network in Hamburg. In mid-February, members of the BUND working group on electrosmog handed over a petition with over 6,000 signatures to the mayor’s office of Peter Tschentscher. “It is clear to us that the expansion of the mobile communications infrastructure with 5G technology must not take place without examining the health and environmental impact and without the prescribed technology assessment. The expansion now underway without such an assessment contradicts the legally enshrined precautionary principle,” says Manfred Braasch, Managing Director of BUND Hamburg. Other major European cities such as Brussels, Florence and Geneva, other locations in Ireland and over 100 municipalities in Italy have already spoken out in favor of a 5G rollout freeze.

Protest march in Zurich

According to a report by the umbrella organization Elektrosmog Schweiz und Liechtenstein, the “Schutz vor Strahlung” association held a protest march in Zurich with several hundred participants on the global 5G protest day at the end of January and handed over a letter with four demands to government councillor Martin Neukom (Greens). The measurement methods for the new “adaptive” antennas with different transmission power should be based on peak values rather than average values. Averaging over six minutes allows much higher loads. In addition, there are no binding measurement procedures for legally sound approvals of the new antenna types. After all, the maximum speed in road traffic is not calculated on the basis of average values. For microcells that can be erected without a building permit, the same installation limits should apply as for normal antenna installations. Such microcells are also installed in “places of sensitive use” (OMEN) such as the Bäckeranlage playground(1), where an installation limit value of 6 V/m should apply and not the immission limit value of 61 V/m for microcells. This point was obviously of particular interest to Councillor Neukom. “Protection from radiation” also calls for a reduction in mobile phone installations in residential areas. Finally, “Protection from Radiation” is calling for a ban on the licensing of 5G installations, as it is not yet possible to monitor compliance with the installation limits using measurement technology. In particular, implementing provisions of the Federal Office for the Environment are still pending. The “Protection from Radiation” association emphasizes that all these requirements are in line with federal law and lie within the remit of the cantonal authorities.

Direct and indirect environmental impacts of 5G

5G is seen as essential for economic development and is also being promoted as a way to reduce energy consumption in many areas. However, direct environmental impacts and indirect environmental impacts (rebound effects) in connection with the increasing use of ICT are underestimated or not even mentioned, criticizes a report by the “Protection from Radiation” association. In 2013, energy consumption through the internet and networked devices was already equivalent to that of Canada and Finland combined. Today, the cloud is already the fifth biggest energy guzzler. As the main driver, 5G will increase power consumption for the Internet many times over. This is also because 5G applications either require large amounts of data (3D, 8k resolution, autonomous driving, etc.) or will consist of a very large number of devices.

“They increase the risk of cancer and destroy the DNA in cells”

Professor Olle Johansson, former head of the Department of Experimental Dermatology, Department of Neuroscience, at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, warns: “Not acting today can prove disastrous tomorrow”. His comprehensive article in NewsVoice concludes: “Don’t think cell phones, tablets and Wi-Fi are safe; they’re not. These devices and their highly artificial electromagnetic fields interfere with normal brain function, learning and memory, fertility, increase the risk of cancer and have been shown to destroy DNA in cells. They do not mix well with bacteria, plants or other animals, not at all. All of this can be found in peer-reviewed scientific journals that have not been made publicly available.”

Generate a harmonic oscillation field
