New discussion called for on radiation limits

The setting of limits for mobile phone radiation is increasingly coming under scientific and political scrutiny. A workshop in the European Parliament provided an insight into the effects of radiation exposure on people and the environment.

According to a report by diagnose-funk.org, the international limit value commission ICBE-EMF (International Commission on the Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields) is calling for new limit values that take into account the current state of research. In its article, the ICBE-EMF demonstrates why the existing limit values are unscientific and have no protective function. The ICBE-EMF article reveals the “rotten core of mobile communications policy”: The limit value determination by the ICNIRP was the pragmatic legitimization of the business model of the mobile communications industry.

Scientific study justifies new limit values

The newly founded international limit value commission ICBE-EMF (International Commission on the Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields) is calling for the limit values for high-frequency radio radiation (WLAN, mobile telephony, Bluetooth) to be redefined. In the summer of 2022, the Commission published a study entitled “Scientific findings invalidate health assumptions underlying the FCC (Federal Communication Commission, USA) and ICNIRP radiofrequency radiation limits”.

Claims

Based on the current state of scientific knowledge, the Commission formulates the following demands: The effects and risks of radiofrequency radiation must be independently reassessed on the basis of scientific findings from peer-reviewed studies conducted over the last 25 years. The public should also be informed about the health risks of wireless radiation and encouraged to take precautions to minimize exposure, especially children, pregnant women and people who are electromagnetically hypersensitive.

The stronger the pulsation, the more harmful the radiation

As the Swiss consumer magazine Saldo reported, Niels Kuster, professor at ETH Zurich, is also calling for stricter regulations on radiation exposure. In his current study, he shows: The stronger the pulsation, the more harmful the radiation is at the same field strength. According to the report, these factors have a “strong influence” on health at higher frequencies – especially on people who live near antennas and are exposed to pulsating radiation day and night.

Workshop with the European Parliament

It is to be hoped that all these new findings will trigger a rethink in politics. Perhaps the workshop organized by MEP Michele Rivasi (GRÜNDE/ALERT) on 7 February in the European Parliament provided the necessary food for thought. According to a report by diagnose-funk.org, the workshop dealt with the dangers of modern wireless communication technologies. Rob van der Boom, co-initiator of the citizens’ initiative “Stop 5G, Stay Connected but Protected” and active in the organization “Europeans for Safe Connections”, which is currently being founded, presented the downsides of the wireless age and the introduction of 5G. He pointed out the negative effects on the health of people, flora and fauna. He outlined the impact on the privacy of EU citizens, as well as the waste and environmental pollution caused by the extraction of rare resources destined for electronic devices. Short presentations and a film impressively illustrated what exposure to electrosmog means for electro-hypersensitive people. However, Peter Stuckmann (European Commission, DG CNECT), who was present as a representative of the Commission, apparently ignored the comments “without any empathy” and said that the EU needed the expansion of 5G and 6G because of its global market leadership.

Federal court prohibits continuous radio for radio water meters

The decision of the Swiss Federal Supreme Court, which, according to a report by the gigaherz.ch association, prohibits permanent radio communication with radio water meters, is slightly hopeful. In its judgment, the high court found that a single short mailing with the current meter reading at the request of the meter reader was sufficient for the purpose of preparing the annual or semi-annual water bill. Anything else would simply not be compatible with the applicable data protection legislation. Accordingly, the Federal Court only tolerates radio water meters that briefly transmit the current meter reading once at the time of billing, be it annually or semi-annually, and nothing else.

“Why didn’t we know about this?”

Hans-U. Jakob from the gigaherz.ch association poses the key question at the end of his article: “Why didn’t we know about this sensational ruling until now? Who has an interest in keeping it as secret as possible? Is it the thousands of municipalities that have already installed millions of permanently sparking water meters and now have to convert or retrofit them?” Individual meter manufacturers have apparently already reacted to this Federal Court ruling and offer additional modules that prevent continuous radio transmission and only transmit the current meter reading at the time of the annual or semi-annual reading. All stored data can then – according to Hans-U. Jakob – can only be read on site directly at the meter itself, if ever necessary.

Generate a harmonic oscillation field

How can you protect yourself and your children from high-frequency radiation and electrosmog? “The law of resonance states that no resonances can occur in an oscillating field with oscillations whose frequencies lie outside those of the field,” says Richard Neubersch. In other words: In a harmonic oscillation field, artificial radiation has no effect, regardless of who generates it, whether it comes from a neighbor or a nearby mobile phone mast.
