Thousands demonstrate against 5G

Thousands protested in Bern and Berlin against the installation of further 5G antennas. Doctors warn of health and environmental risks from electromagnetic radiation.

Concerned about possible health risks, thousands of people demonstrated against the new 5G mobile communications standard in Bern on September 21. The German newspaper “Zeit “, among others, reported on this. The demonstrators gathered in front of parliament to protest against the installation of further 5G antennas. “Boycott 5G” or “Always faster, higher, further at the expense of people and the environment” could be read on their posters. The organization Frequencia had called for the protest. Its Co-President Tamlin Schiber Ulman said the number of demonstrators was “a strong signal against the uncontrolled introduction of 5G”.

Forcing a referendum

5G opponents in Switzerland are currently trying to collect the 100,000 signatures needed to force a referendum on 5G expansion. In their opinion, this should be suspended until the risks can be better assessed. Several studies are currently in progress, including one by the World Health Organization (WHO). In Switzerland, 5G frequencies were awarded to three major providers in February. They advertise the new standard aggressively on television and on posters. By the beginning of July, 334 5G antenna stations were operational, as the Swiss authorities told the AFP news agency. The 5G standard should make significantly faster mobile connections possible. Critics warn that the electromagnetic radiation generated by 5G networks could pose significantly higher health and environmental risks than previous mobile communications standards. The influential Swiss Medical Association FMH also urged caution. Some Swiss cantons have already postponed the installation of 5G antennas. This was in response to petitions calling for this.

Demo march through Berlin’s government district

In Germany, the rights to the frequencies were auctioned off by the Federal Network Agency. the auction ended in mid-June. Four companies secured frequency blocks: Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, Telefónica (O2) and 1&1 Drillisch (United Internet). Deutsche Telekom launched its 5G network in five German cities at the beginning of September: Berlin, Munich, Cologne, Bonn and Darmstadt. On Sunday, 22 September, the environmental and consumer organization diagnose:funk, together with the European Citizens’ Initiative against 5G mobile communications, organized a demonstration through Berlin’s government district and a rally in front of the Reichstag building in Berlin. The four speakers at the demonstration called on politicians and authorities to impose a moratorium on the rollout of 5G mobile communications.

Electrical engineer explains in Rheinfelden

Local events against 5G are also taking place at various locations. At an information event organized by “IG Rheinfelden-5G” in Rheinfelden AG, for example, electrical engineer Marcel Hofmann spoke about the potential dangers of the technology, as can be read on watson.ch. A microwave heats the food by causing the water molecules in it to vibrate. The head also heats up when using a smartphone, Hofmann explained using thermal imaging. The water in the cells absorbs the radiation energy. Children are particularly at risk, the 5G opponent explained. This is because the skull bones are not yet so thick and the immune system is not yet fully developed. “We didn’t grow up with this kind of radiation,” Hofmann warned, noting that the effects would only become apparent later. “We want to know where the journey is going”. Hofmann spoke about threshold values, the relocation of brain tumors and oxidative cell stress. According to watson.ch, he referred to the thermal effect of electromagnetic radiation. He obviously did not want to rule out a biological effect of electromagnetic radiation, even if the state, industry and science consider this to be unproven.

Conference in Mainz

The “Biological Effects of Mobile Radio” conference in Mainz from October 4 to 6 is intended for experts from research and the health sector as well as interested members of the public – and also as an information platform for politicians, associations, the media and other social groups. Through international exchange, it aims to promote dialog between science and society in the face of social and technological challenges that affect us all. The conference will deal with the topic of the ‘biological effects’ of mobile radio in overviews and in-depth discussions that are as generally understandable as possible: Internationally renowned speakers will provide first-hand information and recommendations in lectures, workshops, film documentaries and panel discussions and invite discussion. The conference is organized by the Kompetenzinitiative zum Schutz von Mensch, Umwelt und Demokratie e.V.
