5G: researchers warn, authorities play it down

The new 5G mobile communications standard and the Internet of Things (IoT) will bring an increase in electromagnetic fields in the coming months and years. Researchers warn of the consequences. But their calls seem to go unheard – especially by the authorities.

For some time now, politicians have been forging plans to relax the existing limit values and change the associated measurement method. Do we agree with this? What can we as citizens do about this, asks the Swiss specialist group for home inspections in its latest newsletter. The answer: There are petitions against 5G on the Internet and even sample letters that should be sent to the responsible politicians. However, sample letters are counterproductive and are perceived as harassment. It is much more effective to send your own self-written letters with your own concerns and experiences to politicians and to Federal Councillor Simoneta Samaruga, who heads the Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications. In this way, each individual can fulfill their duties as a concerned citizen.

5G on the radio

On 14.02.2019, Swiss radio SRF 1 held a discussion round on the topic of 5G. Martin Zahnd, media spokesman for the umbrella organization Elektrosmog Schweiz, was also present. And here are the most important points from the program: According to a survey conducted by the University of Bern in 2004, five percent of respondents at the time suffered from electrosensitivity. According to a study by the University of Basel, this figure had risen to 8.6 percent in 2009, which corresponds to at least half a million people in relation to the Swiss population. However, there is also the number of unreported cases, i.e. all those people with similar symptoms who doubt that mobile radio is the cause or have not yet discovered it. A current survey would most likely reveal an even larger proportion of the population. These figures were confirmed by Martin Röösli, radiation expert at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute. Peter Grütter, President of the Swiss Telecommunications Association Asut, emphasizes that mobile telephony should not replace the fixed network connection. Mr. Grütter also emphasizes that everything that can be connected to the cable should also be connected. We hope that this will also be implemented in the future.

Researchers warn: It is not irrelevant that radiation exposure will increase massively.

McClelland and Jamboin, two scientists from the Department of Radiation Medicine at the Portland/Oregon Health and Science University, wonder whether the politicians and telecommunication managers responsible are playing Russian roulette by introducing 5G without addressing the biological consequences of the sharp increase in radiation exposure. McClelland and Jamboin wrote this in a comment to the editors of the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics.

Existing study results on high-frequency ‘5G’ are being ignored

There are six studies on microwave radiation in the millimeter wave range – with which the high-frequency 5G is to operate in the future, i.e. at 27 GHz and 60 GHz, which show that there are new problems. Some of the research groups are calling for a halt to 5G expansion until medical risks have been clarified. The renowned Swiss scientist Niels Kuster warns in a new paper that permanent tissue damage could occur even after a short exposure time to millimeter waves. A re-examination of the exposure guidelines is therefore urgently recommended. Incidentally, back in the 1970s, an internal CIA study evaluating Soviet research warned in detail of the harmful effects of millimeter waves on the body. The experiments were carried out at one milliwatt/cm² (61 V/m; ~10 W/m²). An irradiance that today corresponds to the maximum permissible limit for frequencies above ~2 GHz.

Not very confidence-inspiring

The German news magazine Stern took a critical look at the 5G issue. Among others, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) was quoted. However, the answers given by his spokesperson made one thing clear between the lines: Basically, very little is known about the consequences of 5G. Here is a quote that does not inspire much confidence: “We have no evidence that smartphone use could cause cancer if the international limits are observed.” The studies are not yet able to provide complete certainty because tumors develop over a long period of time. “But with every year in which we don’t see an increase in cases, we get more certainty.” It is simply not true that there are no studies on the effects of mobile phone radiation. There are some high-caliber scientific studies that clearly point to the dangers. Some doctors wrote an open letter to the Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, Scheuer, in October 2018. They warn of the effects on electrosensitive patients. According to the study, around six to eight percent of the population suffer from “microwave syndrome”, which manifests itself in migraines, pain and depression, among other things. There are also several petitions against the expansion on the Internet.

Studies on fertility and mobile phone radiation

According to a report in contra-magazin.com, Dr. Ben-Ishai of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem discovered in a recent study that the human skin acts as a kind of receptor for 5G radiation and absorbs it like an antenna. “This type of technology, which is present in many of our homes, actually interacts with people’s skin and eyes,” writes Arjun Walia for Collective Evolution about the study. “Human sweat ducts act like a series of helical antennas when exposed to these wavelengths emitted by 5G technology devices,” he adds. Already in 2005 (mouse study), 2007 and 2009 (rat studies), significant effects on sperm were shown by mobile phone radiation. Many sperm were deformed or simply dead after the male test subjects had been exposed to this radiation for some time. Even more worrying, however, was the following study: In 2014, another study on this topic was published, which was led by the University of Exeter. In this study, 1,492 semen samples were taken from fertility clinics and research centers. 50-80 percent of the samples had normal movement, but this number decreased by 8 percent when the samples were exposed to cell phone radiation. This suggests that sperm viability and overall quality deteriorate when exposed to cell phone frequencies. The same study also estimates that 14 percent of couples in high- and middle-income countries suffer from infertility because so many adults now have cell phones.

5G forces people to take responsibility
Richard Neubersch, owner of Swiss Harmony , describes in the following video what will change with 5G and that each individual should ensure protection for themselves and their family.
