Mobile communications: Harmful for climate and environmental protection

Mobile communications and 5G are not sustainable in terms of climate and environmental protection, according to a new publication by Prof. Dr. Wilfried Kühling. At the same time, EU bodies are also calling for a rethink.

In his current “Denkschrift Funkwende“, Wilfried Kühling shows that 5G / mobile communications in its current form does not do justice to our health, climate and environmental protection. At the same time, he sees prospects for an intelligent mobile communications infrastructure “in which there are largely winners or positive expectations”. The energy and resource requirements of digital infrastructures are constantly increasing, although – according to Wilfried Kühling – there is also potential for saving energy and resources in the modernization of mobile networks. The so-called rebound effect is caused in particular by the increasing number of internet-enabled devices and ever longer usage times for data-intensive applications, which drives energy consumption up sharply – not so much directly for users, but primarily in the world’s data centers.

Not sustainable for climate protection

“If the internet were a country, it would have had the sixth largest CO2 emissions in the world by 2020. The global data frenzy of cell phone users is also to blame,” explains the author. Results of the UBA research project “Green Cloud Computing” warn, especially with regard to significantly more efficient wired networks: “Mobile communications are unsuitable for the home connection and are not sustainable from an environmental and climate protection perspective” (UBA 2020:8). According to Wilfried Kühling, this assessment becomes even more important if the energy used for radiating through the building envelope can be eliminated and further improvements can be achieved – for example, local roaming).

Li-Fi will become increasingly important

In the case of a radio turnaround, the focus should primarily be on the future and future expectations. The limitations of radio applications are already becoming apparent today. According to Wilfried Kühling, the spectrum of wireless data transmission using visible light/infrared light is approx. 2,600 times larger than the spectrum of microwaves used to date and has a bandwidth of approx. 780 THz (Haas 2018). Technological developments (smart home, Internet of Things, etc.) will require ever higher bandwidths in the future in order to be able to transmit the increasing volumes of data. “Li-Fi has enormous capacity and will become much more important,” Wilfried Kühling is convinced. Corresponding components are already available from various providers and have been tested in initial projects.

EU bodies call for a rethink

According to a report on diagnose-funk.org, two important EU documents calling for a change of direction in mobile communications policy were published within a year. The STOA study “Health Impact of 5G” lays the foundation with comprehensive scientific evidence: mobile phone radiation is harmful to health. The opinion of the Economic and Social Committee of the European Union (EESC) “The social and environmental impact of the 5G ecosystem” draws conclusions from this. The EESC calls for regulatory intervention by governments. The EU’s Economic and Social Committee already called for a change in mobile communications policy in its opinion “The social and environmental impact of the 5G ecosystem” published in the Official Journal of the EU on March 4, 2022.

Warnings from the Federal Parliament

There has long been speculation in Switzerland as to whether at least some members of the Federal Council are aware of the harmfulness of radiation. Federal Councillor Alain Berset’s objection to a mobile phone antenna in his place of residence now shows that he already classified technical radiation as harmful in 2018, writes the association “schutz-vor-strahlung.ch” in its latest report. However, it was not until three years later that his consulting experts officially published this finding. In the shadow of Corona, the Federal Office for the Environment sent out a newsletter at the time stating that babies, senior citizens and people with pre-existing conditions could already be expected to suffer damage in the area of the plant limit values. “However, it is precisely these installation limits that have been allowed to be massively exceeded since January 2022 – with the approval of the Federal Council,” criticizes the association. For Federal Councillor Berset, it was therefore more than just a premonition when he wrote in 2018: “It should be noted that future developments could adjust the limit values upwards.”

Generate a harmonic oscillation field

How can you protect yourself and your children from high-frequency radiation and electrosmog? “The law of resonance states that no resonances can occur in an oscillation field with oscillations whose frequencies lie outside those of the field,” says Richard Neubersch, owner of Swiss Harmony in Grellingen, a company that specializes in the harmonization of electrosmog.
