5G: Resistance to “real-life experiments with people”

More and more critical voices, including from the world of politics, are speaking out about the introduction of the 5G mobile communications standard. An opinion poll in Switzerland shows that the proportion of people who rate 5G as negative has doubled within a year.

“While the industry is already planning projects worth billions, one crucial question remains completely unanswered: is the electromagnetic radiation generated in connection with 5G harmless to humans? This question should be clarified before the licenses are sold – but it is not. Prof. Armin Grunwald, Head of the Office of Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag, criticized this in an interview with the Schwäbische Zeitung newspaper about the introduction of the 5G mobile communications standard (see also report on diagnose-funk.org). “If the effects are not investigated, the facility would be a kind of experiment on humans,” emphasized the professor.

World’s largest institution for technology assessment

Grunwald heads the Institute for Technology Assessment in Karlsruhe, the largest institution of its kind in the world. The physicist and philosopher is also head of the Office of Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag. He and his team are working on studies on the consequences of new technologies on behalf of the Bundestag. In the audio interview, Professor Armin Grunwald said: “An economic interest must not count more than the interest of people to remain physically unharmed. It is quite clear from our Basic Law that the right to physical integrity is a fundamental right, while the right to earn money is not a fundamental right.” Professor Armin Grunwald went on to discuss the higher frequency ranges that will be used for 5G: “For me, it is an open question as to whether this could have different effects to the previous devices. I’m not saying whether there’s anything bad, I’m just saying I don’t know yet. I would even say that, based on my past as a physicist and my knowledge of the situation, I am, let’s say, not dramatically concerned, but it needs to be researched. It also urgently needs to be researched, because the auctions have already taken place, in some countries it’s already happening and it’s starting to happen, i.e. if we want to prevent something like real experiments being carried out with people, in the sense of first installing it and then seeing if anything bad comes out later, it’s urgently advisable to research this.”

Critical questions for the Federal Council

Swiss National Councillor Michael Töngi also posed burning and, above all, critical questions in his interpellation 19.3505 to the Federal Council, as reported by the Association for Protection against Radiation. The federal government apparently failed to provide the necessary working aids for the licensing authorities at the time of the auction of these frequencies. National Councillor Töngi referred the following questions to the Federal Council:

1. Why were the new radio licenses used for 5G granted before the legal basis for controlling radiation protection limits was adapted?
2. Can the cantons guarantee compliance with the limit values in accordance with the NIR Ordinance without appropriate enforcement aids?
3. When can the cantons expect to receive the necessary implementation aids?
4. Permit-free mobile antennas can be useful for major events. However, these rarely last longer than 100 hours. Why has it exempted antennas up to 800 hours of use from the installation limits?
5. In view of the public debate, does it consider it right that 5G antennas are approved as minor changes in a simplified procedure without the public being able to intervene?

Conclusion: We can look forward to the Federal Council’s answers.

Critical voices have doubled

The population is now also realizing the uncertainties and potential risks that 5G could entail. dieMarktforscher.org has published a comprehensive data survey on the perception and attitude of the German-speaking Swiss population towards 5G technology. Over 800 people in German-speaking Switzerland were surveyed for this purpose. It is encouraging that the number of people who rate 5G as negative has risen from 22% in 2018 to 44% in 2019. 14 percent even fear very negative effects. More than half of the population (56%) find it implausible that the introduction of 5G is not expected to have any negative consequences for health. There were different assessments depending on gender: men up to 40 with an academic background in particular see clear advantages in the new technology. Negative effects on health are less feared.
