Mobile phone radiation: harmful effects on animals

Recent studies with ants underline the harmful effects of mobile communications on living organisms. The US government study published last summer by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) has confirmed the carcinogenic effect of radiation with new clarity.

According to a report on diagnose-funk.org, biologist Marie Claire Cammaerts (University of Brussels) investigated the effects of cell phone radiation on ants. The television station RTL reported on the result. The ants already reacted to the switched-off cell phone with battery, they deviated slightly from their normal route. The reaction was stronger in stand-by mode and even stronger in voice mode: The animals reacted similarly with the smartphone, while the deviating movement pattern was even more pronounced with the DECT phone. They showed ataxia, difficulty moving their legs, were almost paralyzed. They were unable to collect food and could not find the nest or the feeding place.

Disturbed behavior after a few seconds

When the cell phone was in stand-by mode, the ants took their brood, carried them far away and returned after the device was switched off. That took about an hour. The animals were only exposed to the radiation for three minutes, but took two to four hours to return to normal walking behavior. When the WLAN router (600 -800 µW/m²) was switched on, the animals showed disturbed behavior after just a few seconds, which was even stronger after 30 minutes than after five minutes. It took six to eight hours for them to return to normal foraging. With the notebook, the animals reacted distraught within seconds and appeared ill when the WLAN function (5 minutes, 300- 500 µW/m²) was switched on.

Clearly proven

Studies and research of this kind are a wake-up call – or at least they should be. Because: “With a large number of available studies, oxidative stress as a consequence of mobile phone radiation has now been sufficiently clearly proven as a central mechanism of damage, which also gives demands for precaution a new legal and political basis,” says Karl Richter from the Competence Initiative for the Protection of People, the Environment and Democracy e.V. in his Report “Against the aberrations of mobile communications – for healthy progress”. The genotoxic effects of radiation have therefore received two important new confirmations: by the second study of the Austrian General Accident Insurance Institution (ATHEM 2), but also by the fact that claims that the findings of the important European REFLEX study were the result of scientific falsification have been rejected in court as malicious slander.

Damage to the health of the population

Ulrich Warnke, bioscientist and board member of the Competence Initiative: “Anyone who is responsible for the healthcare system and is aware of the current study results and the resulting potential health-threatening consequences and yet delays taking full precautions is consciously accepting damage to the population’s health.”

Highest scientific standards

Mobile communications research is often difficult for laypersons to understand and comprehend. Can the system and the results of the NTP study, for example, be summarized in generally understandable terms? “The NTP study had a cost volume of 25 million USD. By comparison, the budget of the German Mobile Telecommunications Research Program was 15 million euros and had to cover more than 50 individual projects. Clearly, the NTP study meets the highest scientific standards. This is the best animal study that can be done with the existing technical and financial constraints to try to understand cancer in humans caused by mobile phone radiation,” explains Ulrich Warnke.

Small increase with a big impact

Even Christopher Portier, the former head of the NTP, publicly admitted that as an expert he was concerned about the NTP results. The advanced scientific opinion is that, given the extremely high number of people using mobile communication devices, even a very small increase in cases of illness due to the radiofrequency radiation emitted by these devices would have a major impact on general health. “We should finally make an appropriate risk assessment based on the current international study situation. A health risk to humans is therefore not only possible, as classified by the WHO, but probable,” says Ulrich Warnke.

Generate a harmonic oscillation field
