Great need for information on radiation protection

Current reports and studies on mobile phone radiation show once again how explosive this topic is in today’s society. The need for education and independent information seems great.

The title should be a wake-up call. Jochen Mutschler, head physician at the Swiss private clinic in Meiringen BE, said in an interview with the newspaper “20 Minuten”:“It is assumed that 17 percent of all young people in Switzerland are addicted to cell phones. In the future, one in five children will probably be affected by cell phone addiction. Something has to change.” The specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy calls for teachers to raise awareness among pupils and for parents to be given more information on this topic. When asked how to recognize a cell phone addiction, Jochen Mutschler replies: “The time spent on the cell phone alone is not the decisive factor. If school grades deteriorate, this can indicate addictive behavior.”

The more phone calls, the worse the memory

The effects of cell phone radiation are a much-discussed topic. According to a report on diagnose-funk.org, a Swiss study has now found a possible negative influence on figural and verbal memory performance. Over the course of a year, researchers studied the cell phone use of 700 young people. The cell phone use of twelve to seventeen-year-olds was evaluated for one year. As expected, the frequent phone users showed an increased radiation exposure of the brain. The exciting finding: the more phone calls, the poorer the performance in the figural memory test, especially when using the right ear. The verbal memory showed poorer results in participants who held the cell phone to the left side of their head.

Report gives rise to discussion

The long-awaited report by the Working Group on Mobile Communications and Radiation, which was published on November 28, 2019, is also up to date. The “schutz-vor-strahlung.ch” association makes the following comment: “It should be noted that this report was written by stakeholders and that no association was invited to represent those affected. This 120-page document is very comprehensive and aims to exert pressure to increase the limit value. It seems to have been forgotten that the Council of States has already said no to an increase in the limit value twice. In the report, OFCOM has converted the approaches worked out into costs. The prices are assertions, unrealistic and far too high; they serve to exert pressure on the population, politicians and authorities.” The report confirms the importance of the precautionary principle enshrined in environmental law and goes on to state that mobile phone radiation is still declared as possibly carcinogenic. The summary is supported by all participants in the working groups. “In addition to the report, we would like to point out that in April 2019 the advisory panel of experts of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) proposed an urgent reassessment of the cancer risk based on new, worrying studies,” the association writes in its statement.

Increasing limit values through the back door?

Does the report of the working group of the Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) serve solely to legitimize higher limit values? The Physicians for Environmental Protection (AefU ) reject any relaxation of the level of protection and present an alternative. “The Council of States has already rejected limit increases for mobile phone installations twice. For the new 5G mobile communications standard, however, the limit values for mobile phone radiation are now to be indirectly increased through the back door,” criticize the AEfU in their statement on the DETEC report. The planned increase in limit values is substantiated by the new report ‘Mobile radio and radiation’. Accordingly, the maximum power of the transmitter1 should no longer be used as a yardstick for the exposure of residents. According to the AEfU, the new benchmark for so-called adaptive antennas is an “averaged value”. “This means that the radiation may temporarily exceed the installation limit value by a correction factor. This new interpretation corresponds to an indirect increase in the limit value,” criticizes Dr. Martin Forter, Managing Director of AefU.

Fear of radiation on the rise

A recently published study (see also https://www.24matins.de/topnews/eins/umfrage-strahlungsrisiken-werden-oft-falsch-eingeschaetzt-194097?utm_source=news-reader&utm_campaign=feed) by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) shows the importance of objective, independent information and education about radiation sources. According to the study, when asked about their associations with the term radiation, the most common spontaneous response was mobile telephony (23.2 percent) or related aspects. It is true that 95 percent of those surveyed were aware of the electromagnetic fields generated when using cell phones. However, only just under 57 percent were aware that the greatest radiation for themselves comes from their own cell phone and not from the transmitter mast. The study was published to mark the 30th anniversary of the BfS in the capital. BfS President Inge Paulini explained that radiation protection is becoming increasingly important in everyday life. She cited the ubiquitous smartphones, digitalization, further developments in medicine and climate change, which is leading to more days of sunshine and therefore higher UV exposure, as examples. State Secretary for the Environment Jochen Flasbarth also emphasized that radiation protection is “far more than just protection against nuclear radiation.” The fear of radiation from new technology is increasing. “The study shows us that we all need to provide even more information and education.”
